Quick tip 5 – Change unit measurements in Photoshop

This is part five of the Photoshop quick tip series. In this tip you will learn how to quickly change the unit of measurements in Photoshop. The default measurement for Photoshop is in Pixels, but the other measurements include: inches, centimetres, millimetres, points, picas and percent.

There are two ways you can quickly change the measurements. Firstly, you need to have an image open in Photoshop, checkout quick tip 3 to find out how to open a file quickly in PS.

You now need to open up the ‘Rulers view’ by using the shortcut key Ctrl + R. The rulers view is displayed at the top of the image display screen as shown below.




Now move your mouse over the rules view and you should get the following drop down menu seen below.



You should now be able to quicklu change through the different measurements in Photoshop.

Quick tip 4 – Jigsaw puzzle texture

This is part four of the Photoshop quick tip series where you will learn how to add a Jigsaw puzzle texture to an image. A jigsaw puzzle texture is basically small interlocking piece which joins together to form an image. For this tutorial you will need to use the texture filter.

1. Open an image in Photoshop.




2. In the menu bar select Filter > Texture > Texturizer from the drop down menu.


3. Select the Load texture button as below, and load up the puzzle texture. The default location for the puzzle texture is Adobe Photoshop > Presets > Texture.




4. You can play around with scaling and the relief. The scaling option will increase/decrease the size of the puzzle shape, and the relief option will increase/decrease the depth of the puzzle edging. There is also the option of change the position of the light.

Quick tip 3 – Opening documents in Photoshop

This is part three of the Photoshop quick tip series. In this tip you will learn how to quickly open a document in Photoshop.

When you need to open a document in Photoshop you normally have to go to File > Open. This takes approximately 2 – 3 seconds depending on how faster your work and the speed of your computer. However, rather than going through the hassle of the File menu, you can quickly open a document in PS by double clicking on the grey PS background.

Yes, it’s really that simple. Double click on the grey background of the PS window, and the open dialog box will appear. Most people don’t actually know you can double click on the background to open a file, but this method can save a lot of time, especially if you use PS frequently.

Quick tip 2 – Load selection in Photoshop

This is part two of the Photoshop quick tip series where you will learn how to load the selection of a layer. Loading the selection of a layer involves selecting the areas around the shape or text. Usually when you want to make a selection around a shape/text you need to use the selection tool, but you can also use the load selection feature.

There are two ways you can load the selection in Photoshop. Firstly, you can use the menu bar by choosing Select > Load Selection from the menu bar. Or you use the faster method which will be demonstrated below.

Open up the object/text you want to load the selection. I have used some text for this example.



From the Layers panel select the text icon and then hold down the Ctrl button and click on the text icon.



You will notice your text will now have a selection around it.

Quick tip 1 – Merging layers

This is part one of the Photoshop quick tip series. In this quick tip you will learn how to merge layers in Photoshop. Merging layers basically combines the layers together.
There are three different ways you can merge layers in Photoshop.

1. The first method is to use the menu bar which is the least common. You select Layer > Merge Layer on the menu bar. This method takes the longest time to merger all the layers.


2. The second is the most common method. You select all the layers on the layers panel and then right click and select Merge layers.



3. The third method is fastest and simplest way to merge layers. You select all the layers from the layers panel then use the shortcut key Ctrl + E which merges all the layers.
